Energy Trilemma: Systems Thinking Workshop

«Energy Trilemma» is an interactive workshop with a simulation game where teams manage energy policy of fictional countries, balancing security, affordability, and sustainability. In 4 hours, participants make 20+ decisions with three consequences each — and master systems thinking through practice. Format tested with 10+ groups.

Simulation game: team makes 20 decisions in 4 hours and learns to see the system. Strategic thinking, trade-offs, expert-led reflection. Book a workshop.

Why your team needs this

🎯

Decision-making under uncertainty — without practice

Strategic business decisions involve uncertainty and trade-offs. But every mistake costs money. What's needed is a safe environment for practice, where you can fail and learn from consequences.

🔀

Departments pull in different directions

Finance wants to cut costs, marketing to expand, operations to stabilize. Everyone optimizes their own metric without seeing consequences for the system. What's needed is the experience of seeing the full picture.

📖

Systems thinking can't be developed from lectures

Books and presentations explain theory. But the skill of seeing connections between decisions and their consequences only forms through practice. What's needed is simulation, not a textbook.

🎮

Simulation game: 4 economies, real scenarios

  • Each team manages a country with a unique set of resources and challenges
  • Every decision affects 3 metrics simultaneously — you can't optimize everything
  • Crises, unexpected events, limited resources — just like real business
🤝

Teamwork and strategic trade-offs

  • Teams of 4-6: role assignment, collective strategy
  • Arguing before other teams: why your strategy is better
  • 20+ decisions in 4 hours — an experience impossible in lecture format
💬

Expert reflection: from game to business

  • Structured debrief: what worked, which trade-offs were unavoidable
  • Transferring insights to participants' business context
  • Not just «we played a game» — but analysis of strategies and decisions

Who it's for

👔

Leaders & Managers

Making decisions under uncertainty, but no safe environment to practice

20 decisions in 4 hours with real in-game consequences and expert reflection

📋

HR & L&D

Need team building that develops skills, not just entertains

Teamwork + systems thinking + expert debrief. Not a game — a training

🎓

Universities & Educational Programs

Students lack decision-making practice — theory doesn't replace experience

Simulation that develops systems thinking through active learning

Workshop program

1

Introduction

30 min

Teams receive their country, resources, and starting scores. Rules and mechanics explained.

2

Round 1: First Decisions

60 min

Each team makes policy decisions. Consequences are visible immediately — three metrics change.

3

Round 2: Strategic Trade-offs

60 min

The situation gets more complex. Crises, unexpected events. Teams adjust strategy.

4

Reflection & Debrief

60 min

Expert reviews results: what worked, which trade-offs were unavoidable, how to transfer to business.

About the Energy Trilemma Workshop

“Energy Trilemma” is an interactive systems thinking workshop where participants manage the energy policy of one of four fictional countries. Each country starts with a unique set of resources and challenges. The team’s task is to make decisions while balancing three metrics: energy security, energy affordability, and environmental sustainability. Format tested with 10+ corporate and university groups.

The workshop develops systems thinking — a skill that lectures cannot build. When every decision simultaneously improves one metric and worsens two others, participants master trade-off management, strategic planning, and team decision-making through practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding interconnections in complex systems and the inevitability of trade-offs
  • Team decision-making skills under uncertainty
  • Systems thinking development: every decision has consequences across multiple metrics
  • Experience in arguing for and defending a strategy before other teams

Team

The game was created by Vitaly Genarov, Darya Zagorskaya, and Maxim Bodrikov. Maria Stepanova (everyvita) is the project expert. Tatyana Mitrova participated as an invited expert in energy policy.

FAQ

Are there prerequisites?
None. The workshop is designed for participants with no energy sector expertise. All rules are explained in 30 minutes before the game. Energy is the context for decision-making, not the subject being taught.
What group size works?
Optimal 12-30 people. Minimum 8, maximum 50. Participants split into teams of 4-6. Both in-person and online formats available.
Can it be done online?
Yes. The online version uses the web app at trilemma.edunit.org. The offline format includes physical cards and game boards. Both formats include expert-led reflection.
Can it be adapted for our industry?
The base scenario is energy policy (a universal context for strategic decisions). For corporate clients, we adapt the reflection and debrief to your team's challenges: connecting game insights to real business decisions.
How is this different from regular team building?
Regular team building entertains. Energy Trilemma develops: systems thinking, trade-off skills, strategy argumentation. Expert debrief transfers the game experience to real business situations.
